Famous singer Zubeen Garg’s family on Friday announced that they will set up a foundation in her name to work for the society in line with her vision. The singer’s wife Garima Garg and sister Palmee Borthakur made the announcement at a press conference in Guwahati.
“After consulting our family members, relatives, well-wishers and people from different walks of life associated with her, we decided to start a foundation in the name of Zubeen Garg,” Garima said. He added that Zubeen Fan Club members will also work closely with the foundation.
Garima said the family property in the Kharghuli area of the city will be donated to the foundation that will operate from there. “The foundation will work on issues close to Zubeen’s heart, including nature conservation and supporting young talents. It will also take steps for scientific protection of intellectual property rights of her creations and will have a dedicated research wing to deal with her life and works,” he said.
The family said the foundation will work closely with the Kalaguru Artists Foundation, founded by Garg, in the social and cultural spheres, and Abhinaya: Jonkie Borthakur Performing Arts Academy, named after the singer’s deceased sister, on initiatives aimed at the new generation. They shared that through this trust, they aim to preserve his dreams, work, creative legacy, ideals and beliefs for future generations.
The 52-year-old singer-composer-actor died while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he went to attend the Northeast Festival on September 19. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the case, has charged festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and two band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta with murder.
Zubeen’s cousin Sandipan Garg was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The singer’s two personal security guards (PSOs), Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, were charged with criminal conspiracy and breach of trust by misusing funds or property entrusted to them.
