One person was dead, three people were missing and 16 people were rescued after a pontoon boat capsized near Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco on Tuesday, authorities said.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispin said at a press conference that there were 19 people on the ship. Authorities later updated the number of passengers to 20 and said three people were missing. The 13 survivors managed to reach shore safely, while the other three people were transported to hospital.

One of the people pulled from the water received CPR and was later pronounced dead, Crispin said.

The boat was a three-deck pontoon boat about 2,000 feet from Alcatraz Island when it capsized, Crispin said.

Crispin said the San Francisco Fire Department first responded to a report of a ship fire around 3:35 p.m., but crews found a capsized boat instead. He later said there was no evidence of a fire.

Crispin said authorities, including the US Coast Guard, were searching for the two missing people with 11 ships, divers and helicopters.

“It is a very active environment,” the official said, adding that the search efforts will probably continue until the evening.

Fire Lt. Mariano Elias later told Fox News Digital that search operations would continue throughout the night and into Wednesday morning.

Crispin described the boat as a recreational boat.

Crispin said the San Francisco Police Department’s marine unit found the ship had capsized and was mostly submerged, with fuel leaking into the water and the engine still running. While one person was found in the water, the other people on the ship were found on the top of the boat and were rescued.
