PK Mishra, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, said the 21st century should be a period of “intellectual decolonization” that would help restore the self-reliance of civilization. Addressing the third convocation of Nalanda University on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Mr. Mishra said that despite tremendous advancements in communication technology, the world is facing geopolitical conflicts and uncertainties.

“There are universities that are institutions. Then there are universities that are symbols of civilization. Nalanda falls in the second category. The revival of Nalanda University reflects India’s belief that openness, pluralism, dialogue and inquiry remain fundamental to the future of humanity,” Mr. Mishra said. Located in Rajgir, Bihar, Nalanda University is an international university of ‘National Importance’, supported by 18 partner countries of the East Asia Summit.

‘Work without walls’

Mr. Mishra congratulated the graduating students of the university and encouraged them to “work without walls”, urging them to follow the true lesson of the ancient Nalanda wisdom of openness and tackle global challenges such as climate change.

“The fundamental question before humanity is not just whether we can produce more knowledge or technology, but whether knowledge remains linked to wisdom, ethics, compassion and human responsibility,” Mr. Mishra said. He emphasized Ayurvedic traditions, Buddhist knowledge systems and ancient texts such as the Arthashastra, and said the 21st century would be a “period of intellectual decolonization.” Highlighting the potential of Nalanda University, Mr. Mishra argued that Asia is at a “critical global turning point” that will bring rapid economic growth for countries in the region.

The modern Nalanda University is inspired by the ancient Nalanda University, which was known as a center of learning and science that attracted scholars and visitors from different parts of the world, especially Southeast and East Asia. The modern university carries forward the vision of the ancient traditions of science.

“Nalanda is also futuristic because the ideals and standards of the ancient center of learning have proven universal as viable solutions towards a shared and sustainable future not only for Asia but for all,” the university’s website says. Tuesday’s convocation ceremony was also attended by Bihar Governor Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain; Sachin Chaturvedi, Vice-Chancellor, Nalanda University; and Rudrendra Tandon, Secretary (East), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ambassadors and representatives of partner countries.
