5 magnitude quake jolts Afghanistan, causes tremors in Kashmir Valley

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported a 5.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan at a depth of 220 kilometers on 21 October 2025 at 23:44:48 Indian Standard Time (IST). The epicenter of the earthquake was Latitude: 36.49 N, Longitude: 71.18 East.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan late Tuesday night, causing tremors in the Kashmir valley, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported.

In its post on X, NCS stated that the earthquake occurred at 23:44:48 Indian Standard Time (IST) at a depth of 220 kilometers. Read “EQ of M: 5.0, Date: 21.10.2025 23:44:48 IST, Latitude: 36.49 N, Longitude: 71.18 E, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan”. The epicenter of the earthquake was determined as Latitude: 36.49 N, Longitude: 71.18 East.

– 279 km northeast of Kabul, Afghanistan
– 312 km southeast of Dushanbe, Tajikistan
– 355 km northwest of Islamabad, Pakistan
– 397 km northwest of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India
– 423 km northwest of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India

According to the information obtained, there was no loss of life or property in Kashmir.

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Afghanistan at a depth of 110 kilometers in the early hours of Tuesday, the National Center for Seismology reported. The epicenter of the earthquake was determined as Latitude: 36.35 N, Longitude: 70.86 E. This followed a series of earthquakes, including a 5.5-magnitude quake in northern Afghanistan on October 17, the fifth quake in less than a month. Luckily, there was no loss of life.

Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India lie in a highly seismically active region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making the region prone to moderate to strong earthquakes that can be felt across borders.

This collision zone makes the country highly vulnerable to severe earthquakes. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are located at the southern edge of the Eurasian plate. At the same time, Sindh and Punjab are located at the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, which contributes to frequent earthquake activity.

Balochistan is located near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Other sensitive regions such as Punjab, located at the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, are also susceptible to seismic activity. Sindh is less prone but remains at risk due to its location.
