GPT Alumni Oppose Private Project on College Land

Kakinada: Graduates of the Government Girls Polytechnic (GPT) in Kakinada have opposed the report that the government should hand over 3.64 acres of the college land to a private firm for the construction of a hotel, convention center and other tourism-related facilities.
The land was earlier acquired by Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC). The alumni, along with CPI, CPM and other organizations, called on the government to withdraw the offer and return the land to the university.
They demanded that the land be used for public purposes, including the proposed Ayush Medical College adjacent to the Ayush Medical Hospital, which is expected to open soon.
Alumni said Government Girls Polytechnic School is an exclusively women’s institution and there is a girls’ hostel on the campus. They argued that transferring part of the land to a private company could affect students’ safety and academic environment.
They also noted that the campus has a 400-meter athletics track that hosts state-level sports events. The college had previously submitted proposals for infrastructure development, including additional buildings, sports facilities and skills development centres, but these were not acted upon.
Alumni member P. Padmaja said the former students were not willing to accept the offer and were preparing to launch an agitation if the government went ahead with land transfer.
Another graduate appealed to Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan to intervene and ensure that the land remains with the institution. The graduate also called on his former students to unite and oppose the proposal.
