646 Assam govt. schools without electricity, 283 lack boys’ toilets

GUWAHATI

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said on Tuesday, March 7, 2026, that a total of 646 government schools do not have “any electricity” while 283 do not have toilets for boys.

The first and second categories represent 1.53% and 0.64% of the State’s 44,243 government-run and government-aided schools, respectively.

On the bright side, Pegu said on social media platform

He said the state government has allocated ₹4 crore for the current financial year to provide electricity connection in all excluded schools. He also announced a plan to provide all the necessary infrastructure to these schools by March 2027.

The Minister said, “This financial year, the construction of men’s toilets has started in 283 schools.”

Mr Pegu also said that 10,033 of the 10,965 government-run schools have at least one digital learning facility, including an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory and a tele-learning facility or smart classroom.

“The remaining schools have not yet been provided with digital infrastructure. Additional ICT laboratories will be provided to 328 schools during the current financial year, thereby reducing the number of unprotected schools to 608,” the State Education Minister said.
