Dame Sarah Mullally: The ‘safe pair of hands’ appointed the first female Archbishop of Canterbury

Dame Sarah Mullally is not a stranger to make history because it is the first woman to accept the most senior ministry position of the Church of England as Canterbury Archbishop.

The appointment follows a distinguished career marked with many leading roles, including the youngest head nurse of the UK and the first female bishop of London.

Now faced with a challenging task, ongoing protection scandals reduce deep divisions on blessings for gay couples and church participation figures that have not yet returned to pandemic levels.

In spite of these obstacles, he positions his comprehensive experience as a “safe hand pair olan which is widely accepted for the role.

He was appointed in 2001 and left in 2004 as a chief nurse in the health department and served as a full -time ministry in Sutton London district.

In 2005, he accepted his extraordinary contribution to nursing and midwifery and made a Dame.

When he was called the bishop of London in 2017, he spoke about his different careers and said that he always felt that he has a profession :: Following Jesus Christ ”.

At that time he said: “Often, two careers are asked what it is like, first in NHS and now in the church.

“I always prefer to think that I have a profession: to follow Jesus Christ, to recognize and recognize him, always trying to live in compassion in the service of others such as a nurse, a priest or a bishop.”

The appointment at that time pointed out the sign of a church progress on the roles of women who followed Libby Lane, which was celebrated as the first female bishop in 2015.

Canterbury Archbishop is automatically given a place in the House of Lords, while Dame Sarah has been a senior bishop since 2018.

He will vote at the Death Invoice supported for England and Wales, which are currently evaluated in Westminster.

A powerful opponent warned that the bill was “failed on the central board, presented elections”.

Last month, Lords said that “election was an illusion ve and said,“ This bill is changes that can protect us completely from negative effects, ”he said.

Dame Sarah is seen as progressive about blessings of the same gender in the church-a strong issue among members of the church.

In 2023, after a vote to confirm the blessings, he described the result as ı the moment of hope for the church ,, but accepted that there were differences of opinion.

He said: “As a way, I know that what we recommend is not going forward enough for many people, and for others too far.”

On his role in giving blessings, he said. [with a couple]And there are absolutely prayers in that suite [of prayers] I will use it ”.
