‘Four dead and 12 injured’ in Mississippi shooting after people descend on town for homecoming game

Four people were killed and 12 others were injured after a homecoming celebration in Mississippi ended in shootings, authorities said.
The violence broke out around midnight on the main street of the city of Leland, Mayor John Lee told CBS.
Lee confirmed to Fox News that the gunman had not been located as of Saturday morning. There were no other details about the identity of the attacker.
Crowds had flocked to town to watch Leland High School take on Charleston High School in Friday’s homecoming football game.
At least four people were taken to nearby hospitals. Their status is unknown.
Surrounding people caught up in the chaos told how they cowered in the trunk of their cars to escape the gunshots.
No suspects are currently in custody. The Daily Mail contacted the Leland Police Department for more details, but a spokesperson said no further information was available at this time.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred in the City of Leland,” Mayor Lee wrote on Facebook hours after the incident.

A woman from Leland posted online at the time of the incident that she was hiding in someone’s trunk while the shooting occurred.
“Thank God I’m okay,” he said in a video referencing the graduation ceremony. ‘We were supposed to have fun.’
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation confirmed to the Daily Mail that they were assisting with the investigation.
To combat violence in the city, the mayor declared a state of emergency in May, mandating a 9 p.m. curfew for residents under 21 and a 12 a.m. curfew for residents over 21.

New York Giants player and 1991 Super Bowl Champion Johnie Cooks attended Leland High School before playing at Mississippi State and being drafted into the NFL in 1982.
The shooting followed another at a different high school three hours away in Heidelberg, MS.
The violence left two people dead and at least one injured. According to WDAM.
