Following US President Donald Trump’s recent claims that India will stop buying Russian oil, New Delhi issued a statement on Thursday strongly confirming that its decision on energy imports was motivated solely by the need for Indian consumers to protect their interests in today’s turbulent international market.
Trump’s ‘Assurance’ Claim from Modi
The statement came after US President Donald Trump’s statements at the White House on Wednesday. Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that India would stop purchasing crude oil from Russia.

Trump reportedly said, “I wasn’t happy with India buying oil. And he (Modi) promised me today that they wouldn’t buy oil from Russia. This is a big pause,” and that the change “will happen in a short time.”

The US President also stated that he would urge China to implement a similar policy.
India Prioritizes ‘Indian Consumer’
Responding directly, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed the government’s clear stance on energy imports.
“India is a major importer of gas and oil. Protecting the interests of the Indian consumer in an uncertain energy environment has been our consistent policy priority. Our import policies are shaped solely towards this objective,” Jaiswal said. he said.
MEA spokesperson listed India’s twin objectives regarding the country’s energy policy as follows:
To ensure stable energy prices and secure supply.
Expanding and diversifying energy resources when necessary to suit market conditions.
Relations with Washington Expand
Jaiswal also spoke about energy cooperation with the US, confirming that talks are ongoing to further deepen cooperation.
“In the case of the United States, we have been trying to expand our energy supply for decades. This has made steady progress over the last decade,” he said.
The announcement ended by stating that the US Administration is willing to develop energy cooperation with India and assuring that “talks are continuing”.
