Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has threatened to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) coalition government in Tripura if the ‘Tiprasa’ (indigenous) people are not given their rights.

In the 60-member Tripura Assembly, the BJP has 33 MLAs, the TMP has 13 MLAs and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has one legislator.

Addressing a party program at Karbook in Gomati district on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Mr. Debbarma said, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured us of making an agreement with TMP (for the development of Tiprasa people). I met him and requested him to implement the Tiprasa agreement. How long will we wait for our rights?” TMP had signed an agreement with the Central and State Government in March 2024 for the development of Tiprasa people.

“I want to emphasize once again that we will resign if our rights are not given. TMP is not just a party but a mission for Greater Tipraland. IPFT may remain with the BJP even if it does not get power or rights for five to six years, but we will not wait,” he said.

Mr. Debbarma, who claimed to be the grandson of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, said neither he nor the people of Tiprasa were beggars.

“No political party (BJP, Congress, CPI(M)) will be able to get the votes of Tiprasa people in the upcoming elections. If you provide money to buy Tiprasa votes, I will buy it,” he said.
