Urgent recall issued for Tesco food item due to ‘possible health risk’ | UK | News

Tesco has issued a recall notice for its own brand, Free From Breadcrumbs, because it contains wheat not specified on the label. The supermarket chain said the error meant the product could pose a “possible health risk” to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or celiac disease.
Around one in 100 people in the UK are thought to suffer from celiac disease, in which the immune system attacks your own tissues when you consume gluten. A statement issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “If you have purchased the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or have celiac disease, do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt required.”
The recall applies to 170 gram packages containing all date and batch codes.
A statement from Tesco added: “No other Tesco products were affected. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Symptoms of gluten intolerance include digestive problems such as bloating, diarrhea and constipation.
Celiac disease can also cause fatigue, involuntary weight loss, itchy rash, and infertility.
Gluten is commonly found in foods such as pasta, cakes, breakfast cereals, most types of bread, and some ready meals.
This condition causes damage to the surface of the small intestines, impairing the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food.
It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
