UK faces wet weekend as Met Office issues rain weather warning for Northern Ireland

The UK is set for a miserable weekend with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland on Sunday.

Heavy rain will hit the whole of Northern Ireland on Saturday night, then gradually fall eastwards on Sunday morning, the Met Office said.

Rainfall will be “heaviest in the southeast,” according to the forecaster.

Widespread accumulation of around 20-30mm of rain is expected, while 60-100mm of rain could accumulate over the Mournes by the early hours of Sunday morning.

The warning is in effect from midnight to noon Sunday.

In addition to flooding of some homes and workplaces, it is also possible that electricity supplies and other services will be interrupted.

The Met Office also said journey times would be affected due to standing water and flooding on the roads.

The rest of the UK faces a mixed bag this weekend, but it will feel brighter on Saturday. Met Office meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer said: “As we’ve seen, we’re probably going to see absolutely the best sunshine in the eastern parts.

“It’s hard to say exactly where we’ll see the sunniest periods, but it could be a little brighter than we’ve seen lately.”

He warned that it could still be a cloudy day for most, but “there could be a few more breaks in the cloud on Saturday compared to what we’ve seen lately.”

Ms Glaisyer said it was likely to be a “fairly wet start” to Sunday, with most places likely to experience rain and windier conditions throughout the day.

He continued: “The weather improves by late Sunday and then we get into a fairly variable pattern overall as we head into early next week – sunny spells, heavy showers combined with perhaps longer spells of rain, and a similar pattern for much of this week.”

Five day weather forecast in England

Tonight:

Although it will be quite cloudy throughout the night, the region will remain calm with light drizzle continuing in places. A cool feeling is felt under the clear skies in Scotland due to the patchy fog that forms at dawn. Breezier in the far west.

Saturday:

Cloudy for most, with brief bright breaks as high cloud cover spreads from the west. It will be breezier for everyone later as the rain moves into the far west.

From Sunday to Tuesday:

Restless and windy, the rain will spread eastward until Sunday, long lasting and sometimes heavy. From Monday, showers will continue, with occasional thunderstorms, but there will also be a few sunny spells. Temperatures are close to normal.

This is a breaking story, more to come…
