‘Perfect Place to Store Classified Documents’
Donald Trump’s lavish Lincoln bathroom remodel was mocked online Friday as “tone deaf” and worse; one social media critic joked that it was the “perfect place” for the president to hide his secret documents.
“The tone-deafness is beyond parody,” journalist Aaron Rupar wrote in Bluesky Friday. Rupar had previously also uploaded a screengrab of Trump’s own Truth Social posts showing the marble bathroom.
Presidential rebukes were also all over X on Friday; One user took further jabs, noting that the bathroom “looks like the perfect place to keep classified documents,” nodding to the Mar-a-Lago scandal that followed Trump’s first term.
Others criticized Trump, saying the bathroom renovation showed how disinterested he is in honoring America’s history.
“This really shows Trump’s disinterest in both history and character, and his dedication to screwing everything up,” said a Bluesky user named Jason Karsh. “This looks like what people imagine a ‘rich’ hotel bathroom to be, and it also reflects one of those bathroom plumbing things they do on TV in the afternoons.”
Trump celebrated his latest White House renovation on Friday via Truth Social, where he posted extensively about the Lincoln bathroom renovation with photos and text. He said he stripped the room of its “completely inappropriate” art deco style.
“I renovated the Lincoln Bath in the White House,” Trump said.
“It was renovated in the 1940s in an art deco green tile style, which was very unsuitable for the Lincoln Era,” Trump continued.
In her post, she shared two photos of the bathroom: one before the renovation and one after the update was completed.
“I did this with black and white polished sculptural marble,” Trump added. “This was very appropriate for Abraham Lincoln’s time and may actually be the marble found there!”
Trump shared earlier this month that he was planning to redo the bathroom’s look.
“The bathroom was done a long time ago by the Truman family with green tiles, and it was done in a style that wasn’t exactly Abe Lincoln.” Trump said at that time:. “This is a style that is not good… In fact, art deco and art deco do not suit 1850 and the Civil War.”
He continued: “So I took it apart and we built a bathroom that was absolutely gorgeous and totally appropriate for the time because the Lincoln bedroom is so incredible for those of you who have seen it.”
The bathroom’s new look comes amid the broader backlash Trump faces after demolishing the East Wing of the White House, which he plans to turn into a 90,000-square-foot, $300 million ballroom. Per ABC NewsOnly 28% of Americans support renewal.
