Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. File

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the alleged death of a woman doctor in Satara district last week, an official said.

The doctor, who hails from central Maharashtra’s Beed district, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan on October 23. In a note written on her palm, she alleged that sub-inspector Gopal Badane raped her many times while software engineer Prashant Bankar mentally abused her. Both were arrested.

Mr. Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, has directed the State Director General of Police to immediately constitute an SIT under a woman IPS officer, the official said on Friday.

The move came amid pressure from citizens and political parties seeking justice for the relatives of the deceased. The victim’s family had also called for an SIT investigation so that the culprits can be punished severely.

BJP leader Chitra Wagh thanked the chief minister for his decision to set up SIT.
