The popular Christmas treats shrinking in size – but going up in price

Shoppers will find fewer chocolates in a pack when shopping for some of Cadbury’s favorites this Christmas.

The weight of the Roses, Heroes and Twirl bags has been reduced by 10 per cent from 300g to 270g and costs around £4.50.

Mondelez International, which owns Cadbury, said the reduction in weight was a result of higher costs in the supply chain, including increases in cocoa and dairy prices. He described his move as a “last resort.”

Supermarket websites advertising the old 300g bags say the products are out of stock. Prices for a 270g packet of Roses, Heroes and Twirl range from £4 to £5 on various supermarket sites.

At the time of publication, Tesco’s website listed a 300g bag of rosé for £4 but was said to be out of stock. For those without a Clubcard, the 270g pouch is now listed for £4.50.

Meanwhile, the 270g bag of Heroes is listed for £4.50. Although out of stock, the 300g bag of Heroes is also listed online at Tesco for £4.

A Mondelez spokesperson said of the change in weight of the bags: Independent: “We recognize the economic pressures that consumers continue to face and that any changes to our product sizes are a last resort for our business.

“However, as a food manufacturer, we continue to experience significantly higher input costs in our supply chain, with ingredients such as cocoa and dairy commonly used in our products being much more expensive than before. Meanwhile, other costs such as energy and transportation remain high.

“This means our products continue to become much more expensive to make, and although we have offset these costs as much as possible, we still face significant challenges.

“As a result of this challenging environment, we have had to make the decision to slightly reduce the weight of our Cadbury Roses, Heroes and Twirl bags so we can continue to offer consumers the brands they love, without compromising on the great taste and quality they expect.”
