UK electric car sales up by a third in first half of 2025, preliminary data suggests | Automotive industry

British electric automobile sales increased one -third in the first half of 2025 after June for total automobile sales before Covid Pandemia.
According to the preliminary data from the engine manufacturers and merchants Association (SMMT), a lobby group, the number of battery electric car sales increases by 34.6% in the first six months of the year.
New automobile sales increased by 6.8% annually in June, 191,200 units, the best sales figures since 2019.
The separate sales figures published by The Thinktank New Automotive suggested that Elon Musk’s new version of Model Y, which remained the largest electric car vendor of the UK, despite the debate on support for the right politicians of Elon Musk, was released in June. New Automotiv said Ford provides the fastest growth in the UK electric car sales.
The UK automobile industry fought to raise sales to pandemic levels while life was influenced by potential buyers after Russia’s full -scale Ukrainian invasion.
British automobile factories also had to fight with a major slowdown in response to 25% extra US tariffs announced by Donald Trump in March. UK automobile production last month, as manufacturers reduced shipments, since 1949 has fallen to the lowest level for May.
On Monday, these factories took the seal when a limited trade agreement between England and the United States was adopted, when a 10% lower tariff rate began. 10 % will be applied to the first 100,000 vehicles exported to the USA.
In spite of these difficulties, automobile sales increased in 2025, but the industry said he was proud of the discounts he said that the numbers are unsustainable. As the producers try to meet the targets set under the task of zero emission of the government, discounts are targeted especially in electric car buyers.
So far, in 2025, electricity sales constituted 21.6% of all sales and proposed the preliminary data of the SMMT. Although the “flexibility” in the rules means that the effective target is significantly lower, this is below 28% target.
Caesar, General Manager of Electric Vehictles UK, a group of lobby for electric vehicle policies, said June figures are still encouraging.
“The durability of battery sales as the percentage of the market shows that we are in a new purchase stage,” he said. “Knowledgeable consumers see tendency and savings. In addition to real competition, better and cheaper Bevs should see that sales in the second half continue to grow.”
The new automotive data also claimed that the demand for electric van has increased sharply. Electric Van sales increased by 50% in the first half of 2025 and took into account one of every 10 sales compared to last year.
