Skip college? Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu flags cultural shift in Americans, warns Indian parents against heavy student debt

While signaling a cultural shift in America where students are now skipping college, Sridhar Vembu, co-founder and Chief Scientist of Indian software services giant Zoho Corporation, appealed to Indian parents to ensure their children do the same, in a social media post.

In his post, Vembu emphasized that smarter students in the United States are now skipping college degrees, while employers who value forward thinking are enabling them by offering them jobs.

“Smart American students are now skipping college, and forward-thinking employers are enabling them,” Sridhar Vembu said in his post on Platform X.

Escape from heavy debt

Vembu explained how American students choosing to skip college degrees could bring about a cultural shift, allowing young people to strike out on their own without incurring the heavy burden of debt for a degree.

Zoho Corp. The co-founder also said that this trend will likely change the way students view the world and eventually change culture and political dynamics as well.

“This will be a profound cultural change. This is the real ‘youth power’ that will enable young men and women to stand on their own feet without having to go into heavy debt and pay their own way to get a degree. This trend will change their perspective on the world and change culture and politics,” Vembu said in his post.

Request to Indian parents

Sridhar Vembu, through his post, urged Indian parents and students to pay attention to the cultural shift where students are starting to skip college degrees and reach opportunities directly.

He also called on companies to pay attention to the changing dynamics in education.

“I urge educated Indian parents and high school students, as well as leading companies, to pay attention,” Vembu said.

Don’t have a degree for Zoho jobs?

Vembu also said that no job positions at Zoho Corp. require a college degree, and if a job is posted with such a requirement, that component is flagged for removal from the application process.

“No job at Zoho requires a college degree, and if a manager posts a job that requires a degree, they will get a polite message from HR to remove the degree requirement!” Vembu said.

He added that on Zoho’s Tenkasi, Vembu worked with a technical team whose average age was 19, so he had to keep up with their energy.

“At Tenkasi, I work closely with a technical team whose average age is 19. Their energy and spirit of success is contagious. I have to work hard to keep up with them!” said Zoho Corp Chief Scientist.
