The Geminid meteor shower will peak on December 13-14, delivering up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, providing skywatchers with one of the most reliable and visually stunning meteor shows of the year. But as always, success will depend on two key factors: clear skies and the willingness to brave the cold. For many people in the United States, the latter may be more difficult than the former, USA Today reports.

When is the best time to watch the Geminids?
The Geminid meteor shower became active earlier this month on December 4 and will remain visible until at least December 17, according to the American Meteor Society. Still, the strongest activity is expected to occur between the night of Saturday, December 13, and the early morning hours of Sunday, December 14, according to USA Today. The best viewing hours are generally between midnight and pre-dawn. However, Geminids stand out because they can appear early in the evening, sometimes as early as 9pm local time. This makes the shower especially attractive for young dreamers who cannot stay awake all night.

During peak conditions, observers may see up to 120 meteors per hour. Beyond their abundance, Geminids are known for their visual quality. Most meteors appear bright and colorful, streaking across the sky, often with a yellowish tint.
Although the Geminids are now considered one of the most powerful meteor showers of the year, this wasn’t always the case. When they first appeared in the mid-1800s, observers could see only about 10 to 20 meteors per hour. Over time, activity gradually increased and the shower evolved into the powerhouse it is today.

Where will skies be clear across the US?
This year, about 75% of the country is expected to experience good to excellent viewing conditions during the peak, provided clouds cooperate.
Weather maps for early Sunday show a broad area of high pressure concentrated over the Central Great Plains. This will support mostly clear skies stretching from southern Wisconsin to Arkansas and northern Mississippi, and westward into the Rocky Mountain states, according to a report by Space.com.
However, conditions will not be ideal everywhere. A cold front extending from northeastern South Texas toward the Atlantic Coast is expected to cause extensive cloud cover across much of the eastern United States, according to a report by Space.com. A coastal storm developing near North Carolina could also bring rain and snow to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Meanwhile, another cold front approaching from the Pacific could deliver cloudy and wet weather to much of Washington state and western Oregon, limiting visibility there.
Location is important, even if there are clear skies. According to a report from Space.com, during the evening hours the Gemini constellation lies low on the eastern horizon, but between midnight and 4 a.m. it rises to a much more favorable position almost overhead, significantly increasing its viewing potential.
How cold will it be during peak viewing?
The biggest challenge for many observers will not be the clouds, but the cold. The Arctic air wave is expected to settle over much of the Northern and Central Great Plains and the western Great Lakes.

Forecasts predict that ambient air temperatures will be well below zero in many cities. Indianapolis could drop to minus 1°F, Chicago to minus 3°F, and Fargo, North Dakota, to a staggering minus 24°F. Parts of the Deep South, even much of northern Texas and New Mexico, are expected to remain below freezing, Space.com reports.
Ironically, the most comfortable viewing conditions can be found in southern California, Arizona, and parts of central and northern Florida, where nighttime temperatures can stay in the 50s under clear or partly cloudy skies.
Meteor tracking also presents a unique challenge in cold weather. Observers often lie motionless outside under a clear sky during the coldest hours of the day. Radiative cooling can cause temperatures to get even colder, especially when there is no movement to generate body heat, according to a report from Space.com.

Why are Geminids still worth the effort?
Despite the cold conditions, many experienced observers consider the Geminids to be superior to the Perseids in both power and beauty. Under dark and clear skies, a single observer can see an average of two meteors per minute during the peak of activity.
Geminids do not receive the same public attention because they occur in colder months and have a shorter viewing window. As noted in one comparison, the Geminids could rival the Perseids in popularity if they occurred on warmer nights, according to a report from Space.com.
This year’s conditions may be particularly harsh and “FRIGID!” It may make you wonder, but the payoff may be worth it. A waning crescent will be present in the hours before dawn, but its light is not expected to significantly affect viewing.
Preparation is very important. Heavy blankets, sleeping bags, pads, and layered clothing can make a long night outside easier. Warm drinks like hot cocoa, tea or coffee can help quell the chill, and observing with a friend can make the experience more enjoyable and productive, Space.com reports.
If skies are clear from Saturday night to Sunday morning, the Geminid meteor shower could provide an unforgettable spectacle. High meteor speeds, bright streaks, and a favorable location in the sky may be enough motivation for stargazers to endure the cold and look up.
