The horrific shooting rampage during Hanukkah celebrations in Australia is the ultimate manifestation of what “globalizing the intifada” really means, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens argued in an op-ed Monday.
A father and his son were behind a horrific mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, that left 15 victims dead and 40 hospitalized, police said. The attack against the Jewish community is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
While many conservatives say the Australian government is unprepared to meet such an attack, Stephens, who is also of Jewish descent, has joined the fray with a piece. cuffed“Bondi Beach Looks Like ‘Globalizing the Intifada’.” He claimed that the problem of anti-Semitic attacks originates not only from abroad but also from within the country.

According to the American Jewish Committee, the phrase “Globalize the Intifada” “calls on people from around the world to join the uprising against Israel.” The term became a source of major controversy last year after New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani initially defended its use. He softened in the following months as the election approached.
“While we will likely learn more about the mindset of Sunday’s killers in the coming weeks, it is reasonable to assume that what they thought they were doing was ‘globalizing the intifada,'” Stephens wrote. “So they were taking seriously slogans like ‘resistance is right’ and ‘necessary by any means necessary’ that are ubiquitous at anti-Israel rallies around the world. To most of those who say these lines, these may seem like abstractions and metaphors, a political stance in favor of Palestinian freedom rather than a call to kill their oppressors.”
He continued: “But there are always talkers, and it’s usually the literary people who believe their ideas should have real-world consequences. On Sunday, those consequences were written with Jewish blood. History tells us it won’t be the last time.”

Stephens also criticized the Australian government, led by Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, saying: “The problem with the Albanian government, which recognized a Palestinian state in September and publicly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, is that the moral line between routine demonization of Israel and attacks on Jews who supposedly support Israel is not entirely clear.”
He added: “On Sunday, Albanese said ‘the evil unleashed on Bondi Beach today is beyond comprehension’. In fact, it is completely understandable. For fanatics convinced that the Jewish state is the god of evil, killing Jews represents a warped sense of justice. Even when the victims are unarmed civilians. Even when celebrating an ancient and joyful holiday.”
