U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is demanding authorities in North Carolina charge an illegal immigrant in a fatal hit-and-run that left three people behind bars dead.
Salvadoran citizen Javiel Pena Sola allegedly shot and killed three people traveling in the vehicle before fleeing the scene in Salisbury on July 18. ICE said the man was located with the help of a police K-9 officer.
While two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the third was taken to hospital and later died.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said Sola was arrested in 2016 but was released. He said he entered the United States through Arizona in April 2022.
“Even though ICE arrested him in 2016, the Obama Administration released him into American communities,” he said. “These deaths were 100% preventable. Open borders and asylum policies have deadly consequences.”

Sola’s criminal history includes previous convictions for reckless endangerment, failure to stop after an accident that damaged a well-maintained vehicle, and driving without a license in Maryland in July 2015, as well as an arrest for escaping from custody.
After his arrest in Maryland on charges of escaping custody, law enforcement in Baltimore honored an ICE detainee and turned him over to federal agents in March 2016. He was released two months later by the Obama administration, ICE said.
