Oscars to move over to YouTube starting in 2029 | Oscars
The Oscars will move from broadcast to online as part of a new multi-year deal with YouTube.
The video platform will have exclusive global rights to Hollywood’s biggest night starting in 2019, including red carpet coverage of the ceremony as well as behind-the-scenes content and Governors Ball access. The agreement will be valid until 2033.
“We are excited to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube, which will be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement. “The Academy is an international organization and this partnership will allow us to expand access to Academy work to the widest possible audience worldwide, which will benefit our Academy members and the film community.”
Recent years have seen the Academy work to diversify its voting body, with the proportion of international voters coming from outside the United States increasing by 21%.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan hopes the partnership will “inspire a new generation of creators and movie lovers while remaining true to the Oscars’ longstanding legacy.”
The deal will also include access to the Governor’s awards, nomination announcement, nominees’ luncheon, student Academy awards, Academy member and filmmaker interviews, film education programs, podcasts and more.
The news came after ABC’s goal in the USA a slight increase in the ratings for this year’s ceremony with 19.7 million viewers. The night was marked by the wins of Sean Baker’s comedy drama Anora.
“ABC has been the proud home of the Oscars for more than half a century,” an ABC spokesperson said. “We look forward to the show’s next three television broadcasts, including its centennial celebration in 2028, and wish the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continued success.”
In 2023, Netflix acquired the rights to the Screen Actors Guild awards, now known as the Actor awards, and moved them from broadcast to streaming.
Next year’s ceremony will feature the first Oscar for casting. Candidates will be announced in January.
