Five people are dead and three are missing after a 20ft explosion caused a massive explosion in a residential area in Indonesia. According to police, the incident occurred in Biak Kota District in Papua’s Biak Numfor District and was triggered by an active World War II bomb.
Flames leaped more than 20 ft into the air as dense black smoke spread over the scene, and several buildings were completely destroyed by the explosion. Footage online showed locals pulling the lifeless body of a young boy from the rubble, underlining the extent of the devastation. Authorities reported that the cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
Biak Numfor Police Chief Ari Trestiawan told local news outlet Antara that the bodies of five of the victims were evacuated from the scene.
Authorities said the search for the remaining three victims is still ongoing and will continue Monday. CCTV cameras in the Biak Port area captured the moment the explosion erupted and showed a large fireball followed by a mushroom-shaped cloud rising into the sky.
Debris from nearby buildings was thrown outward as shockwaves rippled through the densely populated neighborhood.
Police units from Biak Numfor and the Papua Regional Police Mobile Brigade secured the area, while the military command, Civil Service Police and search and rescue teams were also deployed to support ongoing rescue efforts.
The statement made by the army included the following statements: “We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
“Our primary focus right now is on the evacuation process, searching for missing victims and ensuring the area is completely safe.”
