Singh was responding to an incident in Patna on Monday in which Kumar removed the ‘naqab’ (veil) from the face of a newly hired AYUSH doctor while receiving the appointment letter.
Various Opposition members described Kumar’s action as “shameful”. Singh defended Nitish Kumar, claiming that he “didn’t do anything wrong”. “If someone is going to get an appointment letter, shouldn’t he show his face? Is this an Islamic country? Nitish Kumar acted like a guardian,” he argued. Singh also said, “Don’t you show your face if you are going to get a passport? Don’t you show your face when you go to the airport? People talk about Pakistan and the British, but this is India. The rule of law prevails in India,” said Singh, adding that Kumar did the right thing.
When asked about reports claiming that the woman had refused the job after the incident, he said: “She rejects the job or goes to hell, that’s her choice (Rejects woh karo ya jahannum mein jaye).”
