Andhra Pradesh To Unveil Coastal Vision Plan

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu instructed the officials to prepare a comprehensive vision plan for the development of the extensive coastline of Andhra Pradesh.
The focus will be on transforming the coastal belt into a major hub for economic activities under the emerging Blue Economy framework.
At a review meeting with experts and senior officials here on Monday, the Chief Minister called for a study on investment opportunities, development projects, employment generation and benefits to fishing communities along the state’s nearly 1,000 km long coastline.
Naidu observed that the global focus is increasingly shifting towards the Blue Economy, which emphasizes sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and livelihood generation. He said Andhra Pradesh, with its rich marine resources, has tremendous potential to emerge as a leader in maritime economy if these resources are utilized effectively.
The Prime Minister stated that AP has made significant progress in aquaculture and now ranks top among states in shrimp and fish farming as well as exports. But “there is a need to promote value addition in the aquaculture sector to increase incomes and create more employment opportunities.”
Naidu expressed concern over the pollution caused by aquaculture waste and its adverse impact on the environment. He said the authorities should conduct a comprehensive study to find solutions to these environmental problems while ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
He also emphasized the need to preserve marine biodiversity through environmentally friendly policies and scientific management practices.
The CM said the state government is now paying special attention to rare earth minerals found in coastal and marine areas and called for strategies for responsible use of these precious resources.
Highlighting the increasing threat of coastal erosion and natural disasters like cyclones, Naidu directed the authorities to strengthen coastal protection mechanisms. He proposed creating a three-tier natural protection system of mangroves, palm trees and other green barriers along the coastline to minimize damage from extreme weather events.
Naidu said coastal areas should be made centers of tourism and economic activity while maintaining ecological balance. He also called for exploring the development and marketing potential of seaweed farming as an emerging sector.
Among those present were special principal secretary for agriculture B. Rajasekhar, fisheries commissioner Naik, Rythu Sadhikara Samstha vice president Vijay Kumar and marine diversity expert Philip Mendes of the VOYCE organisation.
