The Dallas Cowboys will have gone 30 straight years without reaching the Super Bowl after being eliminated from playoff contention when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 29-18 on Saturday night.
The Eagles’ victory over Washington clinched Philadelphia’s second consecutive NFC East title and became the division’s first repeat champion since the 2004 Eagles.
The Cowboys had an outside chance to compete for the league title entering Saturday night. They needed to win their last three games and the Eagles needed to lose their last three games.

Thanks to the Eagles’ win, Dallas will now head into Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers with nothing to play for.
This also means the Cowboys will miss the playoffs for two consecutive seasons for the first time since 2020.
In order to increase its playoff chances, Dallas went all-in at this year’s trade deadline, trading a 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick to the New York Jets for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. But it won’t pay off in the short term for the Cowboys after their failure in 2025. Williams has a contract until 2027.

Questions about whether the Cowboys will be competitive in 2025 were raised after the team traded star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers before the season. The Cowboys’ defense ranks 29th in the NFL this year without Parsons.
Dallas gave its fans some hope with a three-game winning streak in November, jumping from 3-5-1 to 6-5-1 and moving within striking distance of seventh place in the NFC. But a 44-30 loss to the Detroit Lions on December 4 killed all the mood and dropped Dallas’ playoff chances to just 8%.
They lost their next game at home to JJ McCarthy’s Minnesota Vikings, who also failed to qualify for the playoffs.
The Eagles look to defend their Super Bowl title and right the ship after beating Washington.

The Eagles lost three straight games, including a 21-point blowout against the Cowboys, then ended their losing streak with a lopsided win against the Raiders last week.
Philadelphia will finish its season next week against the Buffalo Bills and will have a home rematch with Washington in Week 18.
