A 22-year-old woman was raped by the clerk of a state government-run university on campus on the pretext of providing her with employment at the facility in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, police said on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

Police on Thursday, December 25, 2025, arrested upper division clerk (UDC) Durga Shankar Singerha (58) and Mukesh Sen, a prankster, in connection with the attack that took place on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University.

Additional Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar told reporters that the survivor, a resident of Tilwara district, had received information about contractual vacancies in the college on social media about 20 days ago.

He said that while searching for the woman’s contact information, he found the phone number of the vice-rector’s office and Singerha called him, allegedly informed him about the vacant quotas and asked him to come to the university with the documents.

The officer said that he reached the university the next day with the documents and met Singerha, who assured him that he could find a job after talking to the vice-chancellor and asked him to stay in touch.

According to police, Singerha continued to meet with the woman several times in the city, assuring her that the hiring process was ongoing and an interview would be held soon.

The defendant allegedly called him to the university on Thursday afternoon and claimed that a meeting would be scheduled shortly.

He asked the survivor to come to Sen’s house on the university campus, and after the conversation, the defendant bolted the door from the outside and left the room.

“In her complaint, the woman claimed that Singerha raped her despite her objections,” the official said.

Police said that after the attack, the accused duo dropped him off outside the university campus and threatened him with slander if he talked about the incident and told him he would find a job if he hired his mother.

The ASP said the woman then informed her family and lodged a complaint at Adhartal police station, following which both the accused were arrested from their homes within a few hours.

He added that the duo was produced in court on Friday and put under judicial custody.
