Protests erupt in Tripura over murder of student Angel Chakma in Uttarakhand

Tripura Chakma Students Association on Sunday, December 28, 2025, sought intervention from the central government following persistent attacks on students and youth from the Northeast in various parts of the country.
The demand was made at a press conference held in Agartala, where the organization highlighted the case of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura who was severely assaulted in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, and later died in hospital.

Chief Minister Manik Saha called his Uttarakhand counterpart Pushkar Singh Dhami to discuss the deadly attack on a student from Tripura. Dr. Saha later stated that he had received assurances from Mr. Dhami of a full investigation and justice for the deceased.
Dr. Saha is expected to visit the family of the deceased near Agartala on Monday, December 29, 2025.
Senior officials of the Tripura police were also in touch with the Uttarakhand police regarding the tragic incident that triggered protests in the state. It was stated that 6 people were wanted in connection with the murder and 5 people were arrested.
Chakma Students Association leaders have expressed serious concerns about the safety of students from Northeast India, citing violence and harassment against students elsewhere in the country. They called on the government to take urgent and effective measures to prevent such incidents and called for the implementation of strict laws against derogatory comments and hate crimes against people from the Northeast.
The association warned that such “unfair incidents” could lead to serious consequences.
The leaders stated that they will organize a candlelight march in memory of Angel Chakma in Agartala on Monday, December 29, 2025. Additionally, Prime Minister Dr. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, to advocate for severe punishment of the perpetrators and compensation to the bereaved family from the governments of Tripura and Uttarakhand. They will submit a memorandum to Manik Saha.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya condemned the murder of Angel Chakma and declared that his party will continue to fight for justice for Angel Chakma.
The last rites of the aggrieved student were performed on Saturday, December 27, 2025, in Agartala.
