Fears raised over the safety of British Army families as 300 illegal migrant men set to live at a neighbouring barracks

Fears grew for the safety of British Army families as immigrants were sent to a barracks to live with them.

Following a series of horrific sex attacks by asylum seekers, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has raised security concerns over the Home Office’s use of Cameron Barracks in Inverness.

Service personnel currently living near the base are scheduled to be sent abroad early next year.

This will see service families, mostly women and children, living alongside 300 adult male migrants at taxpayers’ expense.

Inverness families who have raised their concerns with local councilors have become the latest in a string of communities in Britain to express serious reservations about plans for social housing for immigrants near their homes.

Mr Philp wrote to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood highlighting a series of sexual assaults by asylum seekers in other parts of Britain in recent months.

He wanted to know how the Ministry of Internal Affairs would carry out vetting checks on immigrants placed in barracks.

In his letter, seen by the Daily Mail, Mr Philp said: ‘We have seen cases in the news of illegal immigrants housed in hotels or ‘multi-occupancy houses’ committing heinous acts, including rape and other sexual offences.

A protest was held in Inverness in November against the Home Office’s plan to use Cameron Barracks for asylum seekers.

‘We saw examples of this in Falkirk, Scotland, where Afghan Sadik Nikzad raped a 15-year-old girl.

‘His lawyers claimed he was not trained on the cultural differences between the UK and Afghanistan.

‘In fact, in just one week the press reported: Three asylum seekers appeared in court over a gang rape on Brighton Beach; A failed Somali asylum seeker was arrested in Bournemouth awaiting trial for sexual assault; Another asylum seeker living in the hotel appeared in court accused of raping two Afghan small boat migrants who were found guilty of raping a woman in Bournemouth and a 15-year-old girl in Leamington Spa.’

He continued: ‘I advise you to reconsider placing unchecked male illegal immigrants near women and children.

‘Soldiers serving here are about to be sent abroad, leaving their military spouses and children to live on their own near young male illegal immigrants.

‘Parents raised clear safeguarding concerns about the placement of large, single-sex adult populations near schools and family residences.’

He asked Ms Mahmood to confirm ‘what specific safeguarding and risk assessments have been made in relation to student safety’.

Mr Philip’s letter added: ‘Decisions on this scale made without local consent or consultation are completely unacceptable.

‘In addition, adding 300 young people to the city and accommodating the spouses and children of military personnel poses a risk for the safety of families.’

The Mail understands that the barracks will be transferred by the Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of Internal Affairs on January 12.

Rhuraidh Stewart, Conservative leader of Highland Council, the local authority covering Inverness, said: ‘There are a lot of young families living around here who are therefore very concerned about public safety.

‘This is an issue that comes up again and again.’

District councilor Isabelle MacKenzie said: ‘Military wives are furious and deeply concerned.

‘They were told not to speak openly.

‘I am concerned about the lack of engagement on behalf of the local community and the lack of updates or information regarding safety and protection.’

The arrest of Ethiopia’s Hadush Kebatu in July triggered a summer of protests in many towns and cities where asylum seekers were housed in hotels.

Kebatu, who was convicted of two sexual assaults and one attempted sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl and a woman, had arrived in the UK illegally on a small boat days earlier and checked into the Bell hotel in Epping, Essex.

He tried to kiss a 14-year-old schoolgirl and then waved to a woman who came to his aid.

He was eventually given a 12-month prison sentence in September. The 41-year-old was then mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford in Essex just a month after the end of his sentence and was re-arrested following a two-day manhunt.

He was later deported to his native Ethiopia, but apparently after receiving a ‘discretionary’ payment of £500 after threatening to prevent his deportation.

Earlier this month, two Afghan refugee teenagers were jailed for raping a 15-year-old British schoolgirl.

Small boat migrants Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, both 17, attacked the teenager at a park in Leamington Spa, Warks.

An analysis by the Daily Mail showed that 59 men who came here as refugees had committed crimes such as pedophilia, rape and sexual assault in the last three years.

The cases include Fawaz Alsamaou, a 34-year-old Syrian refugee living in Huddersfield, who followed a young woman home after she left a nightclub in Cardiff at 4am.

As she walked under a dark railway bridge, the man grabbed her by the throat and groped her with his other hand. He was given 37 months in May 2024.

That same month, Dan Tesfalul, a 28-year-old small boat migrant from Eritrea, followed a young woman leaving a nightclub in Norwich and raped her in the car park.

He was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison in May 2024, seven months after he was given permission to remain in the UK.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We are outraged at the level of illegal immigrants and asylum hotels.

‘This government will close all asylum hotels.

‘Work continues, with more suitable areas being highlighted to relieve pressure on communities and reduce asylum costs.

‘We are working closely with local authorities, property partners and the whole government to speed up delivery.’
