UK weather mapped: Snow blankets the UK as temperatures hit sub-zero

Parts of the UK welcomed the new year with snow, as the cold weather caused freezing temperatures across the country.

There are multiple weather warnings for snow and ice in place on Friday morning, covering large parts of the UK from Scotland and Northern Ireland to Greater Manchester, the midlands and London.

The Met Office is warning of “widespread frost and ice”, with temperatures well below average, with some remaining below 0C.

Forecasters said up to 40cm of snowfall was possible in the highest parts of Scotland, while 1 to 2cm of snowfall was expected in affected parts of England.

A “risk to life” warning has been issued for parts of Scotland as winds could cause temporary blizzard conditions, leading to possible travel chaos, power outages and “potential risk to life and property”, according to the weather service.

The yellow snow warning will cover northern and eastern parts of Scotland for 24 hours from midday on Friday. Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in force in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and central and southern England.

Warnings will be in force in central and eastern England until noon on Friday, and until 10am in the southwestern parts of the country and Northern Ireland.

Forecasters said snowfall was expected in some areas, especially in the north. They also warned there was a risk of widespread icy conditions that could make travel conditions “hazardous”.

The Met Office has urged people to check conditions before travelling, allow extra time for journeys and be prepared for possible power outages in the coldest areas.

Chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “The very cold weather will continue through the weekend as Arctic air now covers much of the UK, with overnight temperatures in minus double figures in some places and daytime temperatures struggling to get above 0C for some.

“It looks like this cold weather could last well into next week and winter dangers are likely to continue with more weather warnings in place, so it’s important for people to keep up with the latest forecasts and warnings and plan ahead.”

The United Kingdom Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has also issued yellow cold health warnings for England until 6 January. These warnings apply where adverse temperatures are likely to affect the health and well-being of the population.

UKHSA’s head of extreme events and health protection, Dr. Agostinho Sousa said: “As cold weather sets in, it is vital to check on your most vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.

“Predicted temperatures could have a serious impact on some people’s health, leading to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and chest infection, especially for those over 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.”

Winter conditions are expected to continue through Saturday; Amber and yellow warnings will remain in place in Scotland, and a yellow warning will be issued along the east coast of England from Newcastle to Norwich for 24 hours from midnight on Friday. Forecasters warn that about 1 to 3 cm of snow accumulation is likely, with 5 to 8 cm of snow accumulation likely in places.
