Gulmarg Records Minus 8.8 as Sub-Zero Temperature Grips Kashmir

Srinagar: Gulmarg tourist resort recorded its coldest night of this winter as the mercury dropped almost nine degrees below freezing, officials said on Monday. The popular ski resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.8 degrees Celsius after receiving snowfall once again on Sunday, officials said.
They said the minimum temperature in Gulmarg in the last two nights was minus 6.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Srinagar dropped slightly to minus 3.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday night compared to minus 3.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday night.
A low temperature of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir. The valley’s gateway town of Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
The region is currently in the midst of ‘Jilla-e-Kalan’, a 40-day period of extreme cold where night temperatures often fall a few degrees below freezing.
The possibility of snowfall is most frequent and maximum during this period. However, there has been no snowfall on the valley plains so far this season.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted light rain or snowfall at isolated places in northern and central parts of Kashmir on January 5 and 6.
