Maduro escorted to prison
“Good night. Happy New Year,” Maduro said, looking into the camera as he was escorted to the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) office before being taken to jail on Saturday night.
In the video released by the White House, the onetime ruler of the oil-rich South American nation of Venezuela was wearing a brown uniform and two DEA officers were holding him down.
Maduro, for whom a reward of $50 million was offered for his capture, was taken from the Venezuelan military base Fuerte Tiuna to USS Iwo Jima before flying to the US air base.
Trump vs. Rodriguez
While the trials are ongoing in the US, President Trump has framed Maduro’s capture as an anti-drug operation to create the impression of an ordinary law and order operation to go beyond the provisions of international law against violating the sovereignty of nations, according to IANS.
Meanwhile, in Venezuela, the Supreme Court decided that Delcy Rodriguez, who has been serving as the Vice President of deposed dictator Nicolas Maduro since 2018, will assume the position of interim President.
IANS quoted Trump as saying: “She (Delcy Rodriguez) is actually willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela great again.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said of Rodriguez and the interim administration: “We will be making decisions based on their actions and their actions in the coming days and weeks.”
However, overshadowing the scenario, Trump said, “We will run the country right” and “We will make a lot of money from this.”
However, Delcy Rodriguez accused the United States of aggression and declared her support for Maduro.
“This regime change will also allow the seizure of our energy, mineral and natural resources,” he said.
“There is only one president in this country and his name is Nicolas Maduro,” he added in support of Maduro, according to IANS.
On the other hand, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, also put forward the presidential claim of Edmundo Gonzalez, who opposed Maduro in the 2024 elections.
