Tamil Nadu Youth Congress demands ban on Parasakthi
The Tamil Nadu Youth Congress on Tuesday demanded a ban on Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Tamil film ‘Parasakthi’, claiming that the film deliberately distorts historical facts and maligns the Indian National Congress (INC) and its leaders. The reaction comes at a time when the film has recently faced problems due to the imposition of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
In a strongly worded statement, Arun Bhaskar, state senior vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress, said the film contains “fabricated” facts and events aimed at spreading misinformation about the Congress party and former national leaders. The party has rejected and condemned certain elements in the film in a series of allegations.
“In 1965, the Congress government never officially announced that Post Office forms should be filled only in Hindi in all states. This is a complete fabrication deliberately created to malign our party. The film depicts a fictional scene in which Sivakarthikeyan meets the Iron Lady Indira Gandhi and then depicts her speaking in a bad manner,” the statement read in part. The Youth Congress also claimed that the film showed Indira Gandhi visiting Coimbatore on 12 February 1965, witnessing a train being set on fire and accepting signatures opposing Indian imposition; The party vehemently denied these events.
There were also strong objections to Parasakthi’s end credits, which included actual photographs of Congress leader K Kamaraj, Gandhi and then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, and a “completely baseless allegation” that the Congress party had allegedly shot and killed more than 200 Tamil people in Pollachi. “This accusation has been made without any evidence and deliberately portrays our party and our leaders with false and defamatory data,” he added and questioned why the makers “forced” the burning of the party flag on Sudha Kongara’s directive.
Claiming that the film was built on the producers’ “own fabricated imagination” and that it was “completely contrary to historical facts” and that it was made solely for the purpose of attacking the INC with “lies and distortions”, the party demanded the removal of the sequences in question and demanded a public apology from the production team. The party added the hashtag #BanParasakthiMovie in its statement.
Written and directed by Sudha Kongara, Parasakthi stars Sivakarthikeyan, Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa and Sreeleela in the lead roles. The film is set in a politically charged story focusing on Tamil Nadu’s resistance against Indian impositions. The film, which faced many censorship problems, was released in theaters on January 10, 2026.
