Uttarakhand Congress MLA’s son staged own attack; absconds after revelation

The son of an Uttarakhand Congress MLA, who was seriously injured in an attack four days ago, allegedly carried out the attack himself after colluding with his friend, police said on Thursday (January 22, 2026).

They said the statement came out after the arrest of four accused in the matter.

Congress MLA Tilakraj Behar, son of Saurabh Raj, who is also a councillor, was attacked in Rudrapur’s Awas Vikas area on January 18. Three masked assailants on a two-wheeler allegedly attacked Mr Raj with sticks and sticks, leaving him seriously injured. He was admitted to the intensive care unit for several hours.

Mr Raj allegedly fled after smelling the development and was sought.

Mr. Raj is a councilor in Rudrapur Municipal Corporation in Udham Singh Nagar district.

Udham Singh Nagar district Senior Superintendent of Police Manikant Mishra said four accused – Vansha Kumar, Badshah, Deepak Singh and Saurabh’s friend Inder Narang, who allegedly planned the attack along with him – have been arrested.

He said all the defendants were arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy.

Since the attack, the police had been under intense pressure to arrest the defendant.

However, Mr. Mishra said a shocking truth came to light on the night of Wednesday, January 21 and Thursday, January 22, when police caught three armed youths on an unlicensed motorcycle on Sidkul Road during investigation.

According to the statement made by the police, 2 illegal guns, 1 live cartridge and 1 knife were seized from these young people. During interrogation, they revealed that the attack on Mr. Raj was not the result of any hostility but a conspiracy hatched by the councilor himself.

Mr Raj had asked his friend Narang to stage an attack on him to gain sympathy due to a dispute with his wife.

Commenting on the issue, former Cabinet Minister Behar said that he was deeply shocked by his son’s behavior.
