Canadian PM Carney to Visit India in March First Week: Reports

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit India in the first week of March. Globe and Mail It was reported on Tuesday, citing Reuters.

According to the report, agreements on uranium, energy, minerals and artificial intelligence are expected to be signed during the visit. Indian High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik said in an interview that several sectoral agreements are planned.

Globe and Mail He also reported that Canadian Energy Minister Tim Hodgson will visit India this week. While confirming that Prime Minister Carney will visit India, he did not specify a date. “The Prime Minister has plans to visit later this year, it will depend on the progress we make,” Hodgson said in an interview on Sunday.

Patnaik said formal negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India are expected to begin in March. He added that during the visit, Prime Minister Carney will sign smaller agreements covering nuclear energy, oil and gas, environment, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, education and culture.

A 10-year uranium supply agreement worth US$2.8 billion is also likely to be included. Although Hodgson did not confirm the deal, he said Canada was ready to sell uranium under the Canada-India nuclear cooperation agreement, provided India complies with International Energy Agency measures.

Patnaik also said that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will also visit Canada soon. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is expected to visit Ottawa next month as part of regular talks to exchange intelligence and discuss security cooperation.

Earlier on Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with Canadian External Affairs Minister Anita Anand focusing on strengthening bilateral relations. They discussed deeper cooperation in areas such as economic partnership, artificial intelligence and high-level exchanges.

The developments come at a time of broader shifts in global trade, with US President Donald Trump warning Canada against trade deals with China. Prime Minister Carney called on Canadians to “Buy Canadian” to protect the economy from global economic pressures, signaling that there would be more focus on domestic industry.

Carney also said Canada aims to double its non-U.S. exports over the next decade as part of efforts to diversify trade. In November last year, he accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit India on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders Summit in South Africa in early 2026.

Following the return of the high commissioners in August 2025, both countries agreed to increase the number of diplomatic staff, strengthen people-to-people ties and support mutual information transfer. Carney also welcomed the progress made in law enforcement dialogue between the two sides.

Following the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney, India and Canada agreed to begin negotiations on a high-target CEPA with a target of increasing bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030.
