UPS to cut additional 30,000 jobs in Amazon unwind, turnaround plan

Combined Package Service On Tuesday, it announced plans to cut another 30,000 jobs this year as part of ending the partnership. Amazon and a multi-year turnaround plan.
UPS plans to reduce total hours of operation by about 25 million in connection with Amazon’s decline, CFO Brian Dykes said on a call with analysts Tuesday after the company’s quarterly earnings release.
“We expect to reduce operational positions by up to 30,000 in terms of variable costs,” Dykes said. “This will be achieved through attrition and we hope to introduce a second voluntary separation program for full-time drivers.”
The planned layoffs come after UPS eliminated 48,000 jobs last year, including 34,000 operational and 14,000 management. The company had previously estimated that this total reduction would be around 20,000 in total.
UPS is in the midst of a turnaround plan aimed at revitalizing the business under CEO Carol Tomé. Although Amazon was previously UPS’ largest customer, the two companies are in the process of merging their operations. UPS said Tuesday it expects total savings of $3 billion related to the unwinding of Amazon.
UPS reported fourth-quarter earnings on Tuesday, beating Wall Street forecasts and citing encouraging progress in its recovery efforts.
The company’s shares were up nearly 2% in morning trading.
