Donald Trump reminded the world how close we all are to global war after declaring that a “beautiful fleet” was heading toward Iran.

The president sought to shift the focus to “feasibility” as he faces growing criticism over his controversial immigration policies, as he made the alarming comments in a speech to supporters in Clive, Iowa, on Tuesday.

But his supporters were thrilled when Trump told the crowd that a major military force was on its way to the Middle East and increased pressure on Tehran to meet American demands.

President warns Iran to ‘make a deal’

“By the way, there is another beautiful navy floating beautifully towards Iran,” he said in his speech broadcast live. “We’ll see. I hope they make a deal, I hope they make a deal. They should have made a deal the first time, they would have had a country.”

The president also claimed to have “destroyed” Iran’s nuclear capabilities through attacks on multiple facilities last June. Questions remain about how seriously damaging Iran’s nuclear program was caused by unprovoked attacks that potentially violated international law.

“People have been waiting 22 years to do this,” Trump said of the bombing campaign.

Trump abandons previous nuclear deal

During his first presidency, Trump canceled an existing agreement that placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities and instead pursued a “maximum pressure” strategy designed to cripple the country’s economy through harsh sanctions.

Earlier on Tuesday, unconfirmed reports emerged that a military facility in Iran had been hit by a suspicious explosion, as it emerged that Trump was considering an attack on the Islamic Republic.

As American naval forces advanced towards the Middle East, Iran delivered a series of threatening messages to the United States. The country’s foreign ministry has promised a “comprehensive and regrettable response” if Washington launches military action against Iran.

A billboard with a picture of an American aircraft carrier with wrecked warplanes on its deck has appeared in Tehran’s Islamic Solution Square.

The message, written in both Persian and English, reads: “Sow the wind and you will reap the whirlwind.”

US aircraft carrier strike group arrived in the region

Last week, Trump announced that his “armada” would be heading to the Middle East, threatening military intervention following the deaths of peaceful demonstrators and a wave of mass shootings following protests in Tehran. Iran’s violent suppression of nationwide demonstrations has resulted in at least 6,126 deaths; Campaigners fear many more victims are missing.

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the region on Monday, accompanied by guided missile destroyers.

The deployment brings thousands more American military personnel to a region that has not hosted any U.S. ships since the USS Gerald R. Ford was diverted to the Caribbean in October as part of efforts to pressure then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Trump told reporters last week that the ships were being dispatched “just in case,” adding: “We have a huge fleet heading in that direction and maybe we won’t have to use it.”

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said it found that at least 5,777 protesters, 214 government forces, 86 children and 49 civilians who were not demonstrating were among those killed in the protests.
