Hazardous weather leads to closures across Hampton Roads

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Based on current forecasts over the weekend, when Super Doppler 10 Meteorologists predicted a 100% chance of snowfall for the WAVY viewing area, some schools, churches and organizations made an early decision to close or cancel events and services.

Depending on where you live, snow is expected to start falling early Saturday afternoon. Strong winds through the weekend may increase the likelihood of power outages. Tidal flooding is also expected.

On Friday afternoon, some area schools announced they would close on Monday, February 2.

Northeastern North Carolina is expected to see heavy snow on Saturday, and some of the snowfall will still be on the ground on Monday. Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools made the decision at noon Friday to close all schools on Monday due to hazardous conditions. All College of the Albemarle campuses will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Many other school systems announced they were canceling all weekend events. Norfolk and Suffolk were among the first to report cancellations.

Local Events

Many local organizations announced that events were closed, canceled or rescheduled due to the weekend’s winter storm.

hampton

All city of Hampton parks will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, along with the Hampton Historical Museum, all community centers, The Hamptons and The Woodlands golf courses, and Sandy Bottom Nature Center.

A free workshop for first-time homebuyers scheduled for Saturday at the YH Thomas Community Center has been cancelled. The Tidewater Striders run and walk event at Fort Monroe has been postponed until Sunday, February 8. The city’s hiring and community engagement fair, scheduled for next week at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, has been postponed until Wednesday, April 1.

All events planned for this weekend at The American Theater have been postponed. The Barefoot Puppets production of “Galapagos George” has been postponed to February 14, while the puppet workshop will be held on February 7.

Hampton Roads Transit will suspend all service starting at 3 p.m. Saturday and continuing all day Sunday.
