Met Office issues new warnings for ice for 42 areas | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued two new weather warnings for ice. The national forecaster issued two yellow alerts for ice on Sunday. One of these covers the whole of Northern Ireland and will come into force at 19:00 today. It will remain in place until 9 a.m. Monday.

The second weather warning covers a large area of Wales and the South West of England, as well as four parts of the South East. It will be valid from 22:00 on Sunday until 9 am on Monday.

The Met Office warns that “icy patches may form on untreated surfaces” overnight due to recent rain and falling temperatures.

The warnings state: “With surfaces wet following recent rains and temperatures falling near or below freezing, frost will be possible on untreated surfaces for a period of time Sunday night into Monday morning.” Both alerts warn of potential areas of fog that “may pose additional hazards.”

The national weather forecaster also urged people to be wary of icy conditions, saying: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it’s icy. Plan to leave home at least five minutes earlier than usual. No need to rush, reducing your risk of accidents, slips and falls.”

The advice continued: “If you must travel by foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if you are cycling, try to stick to main roads which are more likely to be treated.

“If you are driving, give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions or bus and train schedules and changing your travel plans if necessary.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change: Whenever a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends keeping the weather forecast for your area up to date.”
