UK seaside town hotel plunges into administration after 160 years | UK | News

A historic award-winning hotel in Scotland is up for sale after going bankrupt just days before Christmas. The 160-year-old Udny Arms Hotel in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, went into administration in December. The hotel, which first opened in 1865, is now up for sale with offers of more than £1.6 million. Administrators of Begbies Traynor have been forced to take over management of the four-star hotel due to mounting debts. It was feared all jobs at Udny Arms would be lost following the sad update, but managers hope they can find a buyer and save the workforce.
Begbies Traynor’s Thomas McKay told the Press and Journal: “This is a significant growth opportunity for anyone who wants to take this forward. I’m sure we’ll find a buyer and someone will find it very attractive. We want to make sure it’s another chapter in its journey. We’ll do our best to find the best possible solution and save as many local jobs as possible.”
The 12-bedroom hotel has two AA Rosettes for its restaurant and 60-cover cafe, which will be fully renovated in 2023. The Udny Arms underwent a major refurbishment three years ago and is listed by real estate firm Colliers.
The listing reads: “The Udny Arms is attractively located in the historic village of Newburgh, at the mouth of the Ythan Estuary, on the north-east coast of Scotland.
Located near a wonderful beach and extensive dune system, this charming seaside village dates back to 1261 and is located 13 miles north of Aberdeen via the A90 main road.
“It is recognized for its rich history, natural surroundings and strong appeal to both leisure visitors and those exploring the north-east and Aberdeenshire, including golfers.
“Newburgh lies east of the A90 and is a former port and essentially stone-built village close to the Sands of Forvie and Foveran Links nature reserve; the rear of the hotel overlooks the 132-year-old Newburgh Links Golf Club, famous for its unique golf layout.
“Rear views towards the Ythan Estuary, Forvie Dunes, Newburgh Beach and the North Sea.”
