Or so the internet would love to believe.
The latest speculation comes with all the familiar trappings of a tabloid resurrection: a long-haired man photographed abroad, a Fortnite account allegedly active years after Epstein’s death, and a series of screenshots promising that this time the evidence actually works. The image has since been flagged as AI-generated. The game account doesn’t prove anything. None of them survive even mild scrutiny.
But this completely misses a much larger and illuminating point. “Jeffrey Epstein is alive” is a much better story than “Jeffrey Epstein is dead.” Death is the end. Alive is a franchise.
Epstein’s death was narratively unsatisfying for many people. There was no trial, no public reckoning, no parade of powerful figures. The story went dark before the audience could get what was promised. Conspiracies try to fill this gap, not because they are convincing, but because they keep the plot alive. This is old tabloid logic. Elvis lived. Bigfoot wandered around. Aliens crashed in New Mexico. Evidence was never the target. The goal was possibility.
What changes is distribution. The checkout lane in the supermarket has been replaced by the algorithm. The urge is the same, but the risks are higher. Tabloid thinking has migrated into political discourse, where suggestion carries more weight and repetition does the work of evidence.
The current iteration follows the formula perfectly. First the image. Unconvincing, but reasonable enough. AI is the ideal modern tabloid technology: instantly shareable, emotionally suggestive, and deniable on demand. The fact that the photo of Epstein’s likeness bears a visible watermark indicating that it was created by artificial intelligence does not end the story. He expands it for those who believe. Someone somewhere wants you to think this is fake.
Then there’s the Fortnite account. A username found in documents related to Epstein appears to match a publicly available gaming profile showing activity years after his death. Screenshots are circulating. This was “discovered” by the account username anon X REAL BOX (!), which was later quoted by the Representative with exclamation emojis. Marjorie Taylor Greene (!!!).
Timelines are stitched together. Fortnite Tracker, an unofficial statistics site, is considered forensic evidence. Logic is thin as paper, but it doesn’t need to be thick. It just needs circulation.
The third “evidence” is the most revealing. Dan Bongino, While serving as Deputy Director of the FBI, insisted Epstein is dead and he killed himself. In a functioning information ecosystem, this would narrow the scope of reasonable beliefs. On the contrary, it deepens suspicion. Bongino has spent years attacking institutional credibility and portraying himself as an unreliable narrator fighting a dishonest system.
He even admitted in a December appearance that he was not an honest broker. Hannity“Listen, Sean, I’ve been paid for my ideas in the past. That’s clear. And one day I’ll be back in that field, but that’s not what I’m being paid for right now. I’m being paid to be your assistant manager, and we base investigations on facts.”
The fact that Bongino says something now makes most of the conspiratorial viewers now think the exact opposite. When a person who has been trained to distrust authority receives certainty from a source he does not trust, it does not inspire confidence. It alarms them.
This is what epistemic collapse looks like. The deal becomes suspicious. Consensus becomes evidence of coordination. You can’t dissuade people from a worldview that considers it wise not to believe.
This worldview did not emerge organically. Minister Donald Trump’s The sustained attack on “fake news” has done more than discredit individual media outlets. He taught millions of people that the idea of a common true foundation was naive. Once this lesson is established, every claim becomes tentative, every denial becomes suspect, and every absence of evidence becomes another clue.
To be clear, none of this is real. The picture is fake. Fortnite account determines nothing. It is almost certain that Epstein is dead. But conspiracies are not based on facts. They draw strength from desire, grievance, and refusal to accept narrative closure.
This is the permanent consequence of making reality optional. When institutional authority collapses, even truth loses its ability to bring closure to the story.
