Ukraine-US talks in Geneva on Thursday part of preparation for trilateral meeting with Russia, Zelenskyy says
In further comments on the state of peace talks, Zelenskyy also said that this Thursday’s meeting will be part of “preparations for a trilateral meeting with Russia, which we believe will take place in early March”.
Other issues on the agenda for Thursday are prisoner-of-war exchanges and a “prosperity package” for the reconstruction of Ukraine, Zelensky said.
Witkoff confirmed the talks earlier this week saying the aim was to “explore different iterations about how we might get to a peace deal,” AFP reported.

For what it’s worth, Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski said that during his visit to Kyiv on Tuesday, “the head of Ukraine’s Naftohaz showed me pictures of Russian damage to the Brody pumping station on the Druzhba oil pipeline,” siding with the Ukrainian explanation of the situation.

Meanwhile, the European Commission said it was told by Ukraine that its efforts to repair the Druzhba oil pipeline connecting Siberian oilfields with central Europe were being hampered by heavy bombardment from Russia.
The commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, asked Ukraine to “accelerate” the works during her visit to Kyiv earlier this week.
But Ukraine told the European Commission that “emergency preparatory work is ongoing, but in very difficult circumstances,” an EU spokesperson said.
“We understand the point of view of President Zelenskyy, who says that the Ukrainian people are constantly repairing what Russia is systematically destroying, and some citizens are even losing their lives, [while] repairing critical energy infrastructure,” she said.
“We condemn in the strongest terms Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” she added.
Orbán alleges Ukraine could seek to disrupt Hungary’s energy system
And in the last few minutes, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán has escalated this conflict with Ukraine even further, claiming that Kyiv could be looking to “disrupt” the operation of Hungary’s energy system.
He offered no evidence to support the claim, but said that Hungary would deploy soldiers and equipment to protect key energy facilities.
The move comes as Orbán seeks to make his fiercly anti-Ukrainian stance one of the key points ahead of the key parliamentary election in April, which could see him ousted after 16 years in power.
Repairing Druzhba pipeline ‘not that fast,’ Zelenskyy says
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine was looking to repair the Druzhba oil pipeline but “it was not so fast,” Reuters reported.
Shipments of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia have been cut off since 27 January, when Kyiv says a Russian strike hit pipeline equipment in western Ukraine.
Slovakia and Hungary say Ukraine is to blame for the prolonged outage, with the Hungarian government moving to block the EU’s €90bn loan for Kyiv and the 20th package of sanctions in response (9:51).

76th Italian song festival Sanremo gets under way

Now for something slightly different – and perhaps even a bit uplifting (we all need it these days, don’t we!).
The 76th Sanremo Italian song festival got under way last night at the iconic Ariston Theatre, with a lineup of 30 performers taking to the stage to show their songs for this year.
Now, you could theoretically say it’s the Italian national final for the Eurovision song contest – the winner gets (usually, but not always) to represent Italy there – but you would do it entirely at your own risk of being angrily shouted at by the festival’s lovers, as Sanremo is essentially the original Eurovision, created five years before the ESC.
Cue five days of chaotic, super-lengthy nights of music (last night’s concert ended at half two in the morning, and it was still ahead of schedule) and an incredibly complicated format, taking place in February, on the Italian riviera. What’s not to like!?
The festival also includes an extensive lineup of co-hosts (this year it’s Laura Pausini) and guests, as well as number of, sometimes confusing (presumably only for non-Italian audience, or at least hopefully), sometimes genuinely moving segments touching on Italy’s history and pop culture.
One of them last night saw 105-year-old Gianna Pratesi appear in a touching segment remembering the 1946 Italian referendum to replace the monarchy with a republic, 80 years on.
The host broadcaster, Italy’s Rai, has now published all songs performing in the contest on their YouTube so if you want some Italian pop, rock, what-the-hell-was-that and romantic songs in your life, you can catch up with the action here and last night’s (fittingly, very confusingly edited) highlights are here.
Eight songs from the competition went straight into Italy’s top 20 on YouTube, and there’s no doubt more to come as the week progresses.
You can watch it live everywhere as Rai has removed geoblock from its streaming platform, and the second night starts 8.40pm local time tonight.

Germany’s Merz looks for opportunities with China, despite differences
German chancellor Friedrich Merz called Wednesday for deepening ties with China, while pushing for fairer trade rules between the two countries and seeking Chinese help on Ukraine, AP reported.
Merz, who arrived in Beijing late morning for a whirlwind two-day visit, acknowledged differences during meetings with the country’s top leaders and called for collaboration “wherever possible.”
The chancellor told China’s president Xi Jinping he saw “great opportunity” to develop ties between their countries, as the two leaders met in Beijing, AFP said.
“We are two of the world’s three largest industrial nations. This is a great responsibility. But it is also a great opportunity,” Merz said.
“I am willing to work together with the chancellor to jointly make efforts to continuously advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Germany to new levels,” Xi responded, adding that he “always attached great importance to Sino-German relations”.
Macron names new Louvre head to get it out of crisis after last year’s jewel heist
French president Emmanuel Macron has appointed Christophe Leribault, the current head of the Versailles Palace, as director of the Louvre museum in Paris, the French government spokesperson said, as reported by Reuters.
The move comes after the previous head of the museum resigned on Tuesday, four months after a gang of thieves broke into the museum’s Apollo gallery and made off with €88m (£76m) of Napoleonic jewellery in France’s most dramatic heist in decades.
EU-UK post-Brexit reset needs to be ‘decisively accelerated,’ senior MEP says

The “reset” of post-Brexit relations between the UK and the EU must be “decisively accelerated” and given a “super charge” to speed up links between the two sides, the co-chair of the EU-UK parliamentary partnership has said.
Ahead of the visit to London of the European parliament president Roberta Metsola, Sandro Gozi, MEP said:
“Progress has been too slow. The EU-UK reset must now be supercharged. Engagement, based on respect of the Union’s principles, should be broadened and accelerated ahead of this summer’s EU-UK Summit.”
His comments come just hours after trade commissioner and European Commission vice-president Maroš Šefčovič indicated that the next EU-UK summit may not be held until July, more than a year after the inaugural summit in London last May (Europe Live, Tuesday).
Gozi added that it was now almost 10 years since the referendum on Brexit and it was “time for the UK government to recognise that the EU is Britain’s closest partner for sustainable economic growth”.
“We would like to see a reset from the UK that is commensurate with the scale of the challenges we face as Europeans. Ireland, Europe and the UK stand to benefit from greater ambition and from reducing trade barriers that remain unnecessarily high.”

‘Working very hard’ on Ukraine and pointed praise for Nato’s defence spending ramp up in Trump’s speech
If you expected some big lines on Ukraine or Europe from Trump’s State of the Union address overnight, well, there was hardly anything – but he did speak positively about Nato.
Here are the key bits, via this NPR transcript of his speech.
On Nato:
Nato countries, our friends and allies, and they are — they’re our friends and they’re our allies, have just agreed at my very strong request to pay 5 percent of GDP for military defence rather than the 2 percent, which they weren’t paying; we were paying for almost all of them. … Now they’re paying five as opposed to not paying for it. … And getting that 5 percent was something which everyone said would never be done, could not happen. We got it really easily with one meeting and [it’s] a big difference between 2 percent that’s not paid.
We were paying the freight of many of them. Very few were paid out. Now 5 percent then they’re paid. And everything we send over to Ukraine is sent through Nato and they pay us in full. They pay us totally in full.
On Ukraine:
“And we’re working very hard to end the ninth war, the killing and slaughter between Russia and Ukraine, where 25,000 soldiers are dying each and every month.
Think of that, 25,000 soldiers are dying a month. A war which would have never happened if I were president, would have never happened. As president, I will make peace wherever I can, but I will never hesitate to confront threats to America wherever we must.”
Trump also paid tribute to a Ukrainian refugee killed in Charlotte last year, Iryna Zarutska.
Ukrainian negotiators to meet with US representatives on Thursday, Zelenskyy says
We are getting a line from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, telling reporters that Ukraine’s negotiators are expected to meet with US representatives on Thursday, as they continue to look for ways to end the Russian aggression on the country, a day after the fourth anniversary, Reuters reported.

The European Union continues to look for ways to get around Hungary’s block on the latest round of sanctions against Russia and on the release of the €90bn loan to Ukraine.
The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said yesterday in Kyiv:
“The loan was agreed by 27 heads of state and government in the European Council, they have given their word. This word cannot be broken, so we will deliver on the loan one way or the other.”
Well, they better get creative as there is no sign that Hungary’s Viktor Orbán is willing to drop his veto, six weeks before the key election which could see him ousted after 16 years in power.
Responding to a letter from the European Council president, António Costa, who urged the Hungarian PM to stick by what was agreed in December, Orbán effectively told him “no” as he ramped up the pressure on Ukraine to restart oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline (Kyiv says the disruption was caused by a Russian drone strike, and has nothing to do with them.)
“We take a decision financially favourable to Ukraine that I personally disapprove, then Ukraine creates an energy emergency situation in Hungary, and you ask me to pretend that nothing happened.”
Separately, the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is in Beijing today for talks on trade and security.
Joining the growing list of western leaders to visit China in recent months, he intends to use the trip to urge president Xi Jinping and prime minister Li Qiang, whom he met last night, to put further pressure on China’s ally Russia to end the war in Ukraine, among other things.
