One of Mexico’s most powerful and feared criminal organizations has unleashed a wave of violence across 20 Mexican states following the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho,” shortly after he was captured in the middle of a bloody shootout in Jalisco.
Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) have turned many of the towns and cities where the cartel operates into war zones.
BBC international correspondent Quentin Sommerville traveled to Culiacán in the northern Sinaloa state, another Mexican cartel hotspot at war with cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who is currently in prison in the US, following his ouster in 2024.
The BBC tracked down Julio César Vega and Héctor Torres, two paramedics in Culiacán who tended to victims after the violence. Héctor said the violence in Culiacán has never been this bad or continued for this long.
