After multiple unsuccessful infertility treatments in private hospitals, a 30-year-old woman from Alwal gave birth to a healthy baby girl after in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at the government-run Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad; This underscores the increasing role of government health institutions in providing improved fertility services.

The woman, who had been married for seven years, visited Gandhi Hospital’s infertility clinic in February last year after several unsuccessful intrauterine insemination (IUI) attempts elsewhere. After a detailed infertility investigation, doctors began medical ovulation induction. Since there was no adequate response, she was taken to in vitro fertilization treatment.

She was followed up throughout the prenatal period and presented with preterm onset of labor, following which an emergency lower segment cesarean section was performed on February 7. She gave birth to a baby girl weighing 2 kilos. The newborn was shifted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for monitoring due to prematurity and was later kept with his mother under pediatric supervision. Currently, both mother and baby are in good condition.

This case comes at a time when infertility services in government health institutions in Telangana have been steadily increasing over the past year. In vitro fertilization centers were opened at Gandhi Hospital and Modern Government Maternity Hospital (MGHM) Petlaburj, which offer services ranging from infertility assessment to assisted reproductive technologies, in late 2024. Overall, infertility services at these two institutions resulted in 190 positive cases through a combination of ovulation induction, IUI, and IVF treatments.

From the inception of these services through January 2026, the two centers together recorded 8,359 new infertility outpatients and 19,013 review cases, bringing total outpatient visits to 27,372. During this period, 568 hysterosalpingography procedures (X-ray tests to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes) and 14,033 follicular studies (ultrasound scans used to monitor ovulation) were performed as part of infertility evaluation.

Medical ovulation induction was provided to 3,004 women, of whom 159 tested positive for pregnancy. Gandhi Hospital performed 1,550 ovulation induction procedures, recording 56 positive cases, while MGMH Petlaburz performed 1,454 procedures with 103 positive results.

Intrauterine insemination procedures (a fertility treatment in which sperm is placed directly into the uterus) have also seen significant uptake; It resulted in 366 IUIs performed in two hospitals and 19 positive cases. While Gandhi Hospital performed 32 IUI procedures, 2 of which were successful, 334 procedures and 17 positive cases were reported at MGMH Petlaburj.

The scope of advanced interventions related to in vitro fertilization has been gradually increased. A total of 97 IVF stimulation cycles were performed, resulting in 100 egg retrievals and 48 embryo transfers. These resulted in 12 IVF positive cases; Gandhi Hospital reported seven and MGMH Petlaburj five.
