Qatar air force shoots down two aircraft from Iran: Defence ministry

Doha: Qatar air force shot down two planes from Iran on Monday, the Doha defense ministry said in a statement after the Islamic republic earlier targeted gas facilities in the Gulf country.

“Qatar Emiri Air Force successfully shot down two (SU24) aircraft from the Islamic Republic of Iran. They also successfully intercepted seven ballistic missiles through air defenses and intercepted five UAVs by Qatar Emiri Air Force and Qatar Emiri Navy targeting various parts of the state today,” the defense ministry said. he said.

No detailed information was given about the fate of the pilots of the Sukhoi SU24 bombers.

It was the first time a Gulf country had attacked a manned Iranian aircraft after three days of bombardment, and it came after Qatar’s state energy firm said it was halting production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) following attacks on two main gas processing plants.

Earlier, Qatar’s defense ministry said an Iranian drone “targeted an energy facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City owned by QatarEnergy,” referring to the firm’s onshore gas processing base 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Doha.


Another attack “targeted a water tank belonging to a power plant in Mesaieed,” the statement said, referring to an area 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the Qatari capital, which is also an important region for Qatar’s natural gas production.
The defense ministry added that no casualties were reported.
