A woman who lived as a man for six years said she returned to her “true identity” after what she described as a powerful encounter with God.
One article Published in Christianity Today on Friday, Kyla Gillespie wrote that she struggled with gender dysphoria from early childhood.
“I remember being abused by an older family member when I was 3 or 4,” Gillespie wrote. “Thanks to my mother’s quick reaction, nothing like this happened again. But my difficulties did not end. I began to be confused about my gender.”

He remembered another moment when he started primary school.
“One time I was sitting next to the ice rink where my hockey team was practicing,” Gillespie said. “I was 5 years old at most. My parents were told that I would no longer be allowed to change in the general locker room with the boys. As the only girl on the team, I would have to change in the girls’ bathroom. My little mind could not accept this.”
Gillespie said his confusion deepened after his parents divorced and remarried, leading him to split time between households. She explained that she felt rejected by her stepmother.
“By the time I was 16 or 17 it was clear that I was no longer welcome in my father’s home with his new wife and children,” Gillespie wrote. “My stepmother didn’t want me to be part of their close-knit unit, so I tiptoed around what was once my carefree home. I happily shared a room with my new stepsister, but from one weekend to the next my personal belongings started disappearing.”

“I sobered up there, but my struggle with same-sex attraction and gender dysphoria continued,” Gillespie wrote. “To try to win the battle raging inside me, I decided to transition from female to male. Two years later, after hormone therapy, surgeries, and extensive lifestyle changes, I was finally able to pass unnoticed in the world as a man.”
Gillespie lived as “Brycen” for six years, but according to his article, his perspective began to change after he met a couple named Jess and her husband BJ at a church service. Gillespie wrote months later that Jess offered him a place to stay if he chose to detransition, but he initially declined.

“One night, I was sobbing in bed, overwhelmed in the dark,” Gillespie wrote. “Needing to know what God was thinking, I went outside and fell to the ground, crying for relief, for clarity. Not a half-hearted scream like I had done so many times before without being willing to change or surrender, but a deep soul cry from an abandoned place – a cry for him to save me.”
“After six years of living as Brycen, I’m like, ‘What do you want from me?’ “I shouted,” he continued. “There, on my bedroom floor, I heard God speak so clearly to my heart that I will never forget: ‘Come back to me, Kyla.'”
