Assam govt transfers Rs 9,000 each to 40 lakh women beneficiaries

Guwahati: The government in poll-bound Assam on Tuesday distributed ₹ 9,000 to nearly 4 million beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme in the largest direct relief transfer in the state; ₹3,600 crore in total.

The Orunodoi program is a welfare program for women where the government pays £1,250 per month to each beneficiary.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the money transferred on Tuesday consists of installments for the first four months of 2026 and a special festival payment for Rongali Bihu.

Spring Festival is celebrated in the second week of April. Parliamentary elections are also expected to be held in the same month. While initiating the transfer of funds, Sarma said that if the BJP remains in power after the election, the government will extend the scope of the scheme to all eligible women in the state, increase the payment and make arrangements for free distribution of sugar, salt, dal and mustard oil. “I also want more within the scope of this program. We can probably give you half a kg of tea leaves per month for free later on,” he said.

Appealing to people to bring back the BJP for the third consecutive term, he said the government launched the Orunodoi scheme in 2020 during the Covid period and gave ₹830 per month to 1.8 million women. He said the coverage has now reached ₹4 million and the payment has been increased to ₹1,250 per month.

Referring to the central government’s announcement of construction of 50 million houses under the PM Awas Yojana, Sarma said he would request the Prime Minister to grant some credit to Assam so that the aid reaches all the needy people in the state.
