Welcoming the Union government’s decision to renew the Jal Jeevan Mission and extend it till December 2028, Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Thursday said he will soon hold a meeting with officials concerned to prepare an action plan for proper implementation of the program in the district. Expanding the program will strengthen rural drinking water supply, the MP said.
Mr. Wadiyar said in a statement that the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Jal Shakti Ministry’s proposal to restructure the scheme as Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 with a renewed focus on sustainable piped drinking water supply in rural areas.
He said the restructuring will shift the focus of the plan from merely building infrastructure to effective service delivery, thus giving greater priority to the supply of safe drinking water for rural households. “We are committed to providing safe and adequate drinking water facilities for people in rural areas,” the MP said.
Of the identified 19.36 crore rural households across States and Union Territories, around 15.80 crore households (81.61%) have been provided with functional tap water connection so far, the statement said.
‘Har Ghar Jal’
Quoting a report by the State Bank of India Survey, the MP said the mission has relieved nearly nine crore women from the daily burden of fetching water and enabled them to participate more actively in economic activities. Under JJM 2.0, the government aims to provide tap water connection to all 19.36 crore rural households by December 2028 and certify every gram panchayat as ‘Har Ghar Jal’.
The restructuring of the mission is estimated to have an outlay of ₹ 8.69 lakh crore, including ₹ 3.59 lakh crore in Central assistance, the statement said.
The MP said a national digital framework called ‘Sujalam Bharat’ will also be developed in which each village will be assigned a unique ‘Sujal Gaon’ or Service Area ID for digital mapping of the entire water supply chain from source to household tap.
Gram panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) will be involved in commissioning and handing over of projects through the ‘Jal Arpan initiative to ensure transparency and accountability.
