Supreme Court verdict on OBC creamy layer a victory for social justice: T.N. CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision declaring that ‘creamy layer’ status for reservations in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category cannot be determined solely on the basis of parental income.
In a post on X, Mr. Stalin said the verdict was a decisive victory after years of struggle for OBC justice. He said the judgment protects genuine OBC candidates from unfair exclusion, upholds Supreme Court orders on eligibility for Civil Services, rejects hostile discrimination across employment sectors and reaffirms the objective of reservation to address social backwardness.
However, he said that the NDA government was advocating a stance that could exclude many genuine OBC candidates and had introduced EWS (Economically Weaker Section) quota on the basis of Constitutional reservation.
Even today, after three decades of implementation of the Mandal Commission’s recommendations, many OBC posts remain vacant in leading institutions and the Union government. DMK has consistently fought for social justice, including ensuring 27% OBC reservation in medical seats in All India Quota. “Our quest for social justice continues,” he said.
Mr. Stalin also urged the Union government to create extra seats for OBC candidates who cleared the Civil Services Examination but were not admitted to their rightful seats and to correct this injustice in the spirit of constitutional equality.
