Jaishankar Sets 5-Point Diplomatic Framework

New Delhi: India and the US signaled efforts to reset bilateral relations during talks between foreign secretary S. Jaishankar and US secretary of state Marco Rubio on trade, energy security, cross-border terrorism and West Asian conflict. The talks marked the first comprehensive engagement following recent tensions in relations, with both sides focusing on strengthening cooperation in defence, critical minerals, high technology and economic sectors. Amid signs of thaw, US President Donald Trump showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor over the phone during American National Day celebrations here, Trump said: “I love India… I love Prime Minister Modi and I’m a big fan of Prime Minister Modi.” Rubio rejected suggestions to weaken ties.

“The US-India relationship has not lost any momentum. I understand why some might say that. This is not about India. This is about the US in terms of trade,” he said. Calling India a key partner, he added, “India is an important strategic partner of the US, one of our most important strategic partners in the world.” Dr Jaishankar outlined India’s five-point approach towards global stability. “Let me state India’s broad position… I would like to make five points here: First, we advocate dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts. Second, we support safe and unhindered maritime trade,” he said.

“Third, we demand scrupulous respect for international law. Fourth, we oppose the weaponization of market shares and resources. Fifth, we believe in the value of reliable partnerships and resilient supply chains to de-risk the global economy,” he added.
