“The whole reason the president imposed these tariffs was to try to rebalance the huge imbalance in trade that we’ve been experiencing for many years with China, Vietnam, the EU, and others,” Greer said. he said.
“If companies are going to get this windfall, they should pass it on to their employees in the form of bonuses or raises, because that’s the purpose of the program. That’s always been the purpose of the program. And the American people should get it, and the company should give it to its employees.”
In its decision last month, the Supreme Court said Trump did not have the authority to impose tariffs on imports from most countries in the world under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects tariffs to return to levels before the Supreme Court decision by August as the Trump administration uses a range of other authorities to impose taxes on imports.
Greer’s office launched trade investigations Wednesday and Thursday into a total of about 80 countries and economies under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act. Those under investigation include China, Japan, India, Mexico and the European Union.
Section 301 allows the United States to impose tariffs on imports from countries found to engage in unfair trade practices.
Trump used Section 122 of the Trade Act to impose a 10 percent global tariff on imports. These tariffs will only last 150 days unless Congress approves an extension.
